Q. How long have you been baking professionally?
A. My first professional baking job was in 2015 in San Diego, CA. I was 23 and I started as a “cake filler,” my job was specifically to fill all cakes with the jams, creams, curds, etc. After six months I was given the opportunity to learn how to frost cakes. Within a month I was moved to to wedding decorator team and it was those women that taught me all the tricks of the trade. I moved to Chattanooga and opened my first business, Sierra’s Cakewerks, in 2018, and in 2022 rebranded to Reignbow Baking Company.
Q. What got you interested in the wedding industry/baking in general?
A. Baking has been a part of my life ever since I can remember. As a kid, I used to bake with my Nana at her house. She taught me that food is a labor of love and how it can bring people together. As for the wedding industry, I didn’t realize that was a career option until I delivered my first wedding cake. Weddings celebrate love against all odds, and being a small part of their love story, knowing they would have memories of their cake for the rest of their lives, really gave me a sense of pride in my work and joy for the couple on their journey of love.
Q. What are some of your favorite things about weddings and the part you play?
A. One of my absolute favorite things about working in the wedding industry has nothing to do with cake. It’s the vendors. I have met so many incredible women in this industry. Chattanooga’s wedding vendors are so collaborative it’s unlike any industry that I’ve ever known. If you’re getting married in the south, I would highly recommend checking out Chattanooga. We will take care of you, and make your vision come to life.
Q. Your ideal client or advice for couples such as a must-have wedding event/item, best songs to play, etc.
A. My advice your couples when it comes to cake…
- Make sure your caterer is comfortable cutting your cake. If not, please contact your baker. Your guests should not have to be subjected to this daunting task.
- You don’t need to know exactly what you want your cake to look like. I generally like descriptors like, “clean,” “elegant,” “rustic,” “artsy,” “unique.” This way not only do I get a little creative freedom, but you also get to tell be more about you and your overall wedding vision.
- For the love of your cake decorator and make up artist, please don’t smash the cake in your spouse’s face. The cake cutting ceremony is built around the idea that this is your first task together as a couple. Unless you have previously agreed to it, best to leave all wedding shenanigans to the groomsmen.
