This month we asked Toni Doster Repko, cake artist and owner of Sweet Angel Cakes, to tell us a bit about her and her business. Toni has an impressive number of awards for her stunning, quality cakes:

- First place in “Chattanooga Cake Ace” competition, 2011 – judged by Chef Duff, Cake Ace, Food Network
- Second place in Professional Wedding Cake Category (Tennessee Cake Festival, 03/2009)
- Second place in Professional Novelty Cake Category (Tennessee Cake Festival, 03/2009)
- First place in Decorated Cake Category (Tennessee State Fair, 09/2009)
- Third place in Wedding Cake Category (Tennessee State Fair, 09/2009)
Q. How long have you been baking wedding cakes?
A. Officially since 2006, but made some before that out of my home
Q. What got you interested in the wedding industry/baking in general?
A. I always loved to bake and decorate cakes. My mom did not like it, so as early as 7 she would send me to the kitchen with a recipe to have at it. When my corporate job of 17 years was “eliminated” I decided to start our family and started making cakes out of my home for fun. Word spread and it kept me pretty busy. In 2011, during a Bride Expo here in Chattanooga, we won the Chattanooga Cake Ace competition judged by Duff Goldman, Food Network and Ace of Cakes star. Then our business really took off and we got our first store front in North Georgia.
Q. What are some of your favorite things about weddings and the part you play?
A. I just love LOVE! Weddings make me happy. I love that we can play just a small part in helping a couple celebrate. I love seeing all of it come together too, not just our cake! There have been many times that I will come into messages from our past weekend’s couples about how much they loved their cake. It makes my year! I always have a ball meeting with our couples for their tasting/consultation.
Q. Your ideal client or advice for couples such as a must-have wedding event/item, best songs to play, etc.
A. Our ideal client is one that loves cake as much as we do! I love their excitement and love for cake. I also tell all my brides, “if you could only afford a cake OR a wedding planner, I would even tell you to get the planner!” Makes a huge difference in their day. Of course I would suggest having both if possible! I love the new trend of having a private last dance before leaving the reception. Wish I had thought of that 22 years ago when I got married.
