Veils have been a standard wedding accessory for centuries. While some claim the veil dates back to Roman weddings and was used to protect the bride from evil spirits, others claim the veil had a less ‘magical’ purpose and sprang from the prevalence of arranged marriages, as the groom was not supposed to see his new bride until vows had already been said. There are many varieties and even a few new twists on the classic veil. Keep reading to learn more and decide if a veil will be a part of your wedding attire!
Different Lengths Different Vibes
So, how do you decide on the length you want for your veil? Start with learning the various lengths and style veils are typically provided in. These would include birdcage, shoulder length, elbow length, floor length, and cathedral as some of the more popular lengths. The aforementioned lengths are listed in order from shortest to longest, with birdcage resembling a single piece of tulle or stiff netting attached to a hair piece that covers your forehead and half of your face, while the cathedral is the long, regal flowing 100 inches or more length that cascades well behind a lot of dress trains.
Additionally, you can decide between multiple color options traditionally ranging from white, off white and ivory as well as various edging like raw cut, scalloped or lined. There are many options and styles that were not listed above that can also be incorporated if you’re unsure of what is best for you!
One of the biggest tips we can offer is to know the vibe you want to achieve! If you have a fun and spunky wedding dress, a cathedral length veil would probably not be your best option. Shorter veils are typically associated with more modern and fun dresses and vibes while a cathedral or floor length are generally associated with the fancier, more traditional weddings or brides.
Veil Alternatives
Still not feeling the veil? No worries! There are many incredibly beautiful alternatives to consider. There are also options of half crowns, flower crowns, or a vintage- glam headpiece like CTC Queen Boss Babe Shaun wore for her big day! Don’t be afraid to go outside of the box! If you would rather wear a crown or headpiece, then you do you! It is your day and whatever makes you feel beautiful is what we suggest you wear. You also can decide to wear nothing at all- shocker, I know.
At the end of the day, wear whatever makes you feel incredible because it is your and your partner’s big day, so who else matters anyway, right?
