We’ve all seen the elegant wedding signs with wispy romantic letters that bring back sentiments of the old love letters our grandparents used to write to each other. The way the delicate letters flow into each other seems to give us an immediate feeling of old timey love and shows the couples personal style as well. This art has been around for centuries and is named ‘calligraphy.’ So, what is a calligrapher and more importantly, do you need one? Keep reading to find out!
What is Calligraphy?
According to Britanica, the word ‘calligraphy’ itself comes from the ancient Greek words for “beauty” and “to write”, making it the art of beautiful handwriting. The art of beautiful handwriting has been around in many cultures for thousands of years. In ancient history, some cultures considered calligraphy an art similar to painting and sculpting.
As technology advanced, the art slowly diminished aside from the private works of higher class families. However, in the Western world, due to our alphabet being a bit more straightforward than other cultures, this meant more and more common people could practice their calligraphy skills. The tradition of the beautiful, stylized writing has been highly present in the wedding world due to its beauty and whimsical look, but is it really necessary?
Calligraphy in Weddings
We think having a calligrapher is not a must, but it adds such a beautiful element to your day! When you think of your save the dates, invitations, wedding signs or any other personal decor, consider having them done by a calligrapher. The best part about calligraphy is that it can be done on so many surfaces! You can switch out the decor used to match your theme. Having dried palm leaves as decor? Why not have a calligrapher write out your seating chart on them!
We love having calligraphy as part of the wedding day because it makes the decor even more unique. Additionally, when you have your invitations addressed by a calligrapher, the flat lay the photographer captures looks even more magical! A flat lay is essentially where a photographer takes the small details of your day- your rings, other jewelry, bouquets and invitations- and lays them out in a beautiful arrangement to capture all the elements that are important to you.
Do you think having a calligrapher is something you’d like on your day? Shoot us a message and we can help you connect to some! We can’t wait to work with you!
