When your wedding day arrives, obviously you will want any and all loved ones involved if at all possible. It makes a difference who you have by your side on your big day! With that being said, how you pick your bridal party is incredibly important as these will be the ones who are with you the most and help you when you are stressed. So, what do you do if you have multiple friends and can’t decide who should be your Maid of Honor? Consider having both a Maid and Matron of Honor! Continue reading to see what the difference is!
The Tradition
Bridesmaids and maids and matrons of honor have been involved in weddings for centuries. The tradition seems to have originated during ancient Roman times when the bridesmaids were involved in the wedding in order to protect the bride from ancient spirits. All members of the wedding party were dressed similarly to the bride and groom in order to ‘distract’ any evil spirits who may want to harm the bride and groom. The maid of honor also was entrusted to help the bride get dressed and create a floral wreath for her to wear as another level of protection from the spirits.
The Main Difference
If one of your besties has already gotten married, then technically she would be your Matron of Honor. If your friend is not married then she is considered the Maid of Honor. That’s it- that’s all the difference there is! Think of it like you get to have an extra experienced set of hands to help, someone who has already gone through the wedding process and knows what to expect.
Don’t limit yourself to just thinking of women as the maid or matron of honor. You can have a man or honor if you so wish! Remember it is your day and you can have whoever you want by your side. Just be sure you are surrounded by those who love and support you the most.
The Main Duties
Regardless of the bestie’s marital status, there are some general items she is responsible for along with your maid of honor. Both the maid and matron of honor should be enlisted to plan and execute your bachelorette party- along with the others in the bridal party, being the best hype guys or gals and signing the marriage certificate and any other tasks as needed.
The two key members do not have to wear the same color or attire and can be in whatever you want them to be. Traditionally, your maid of honor will walk out before the matron, but both will stand closest to you in the lineup, making them the last to walk down before the bride.
